Notes
I scrubbed about 50 nearby loud claps, whistles, and yells from this recording for everyone's enjoyment
Note: Bob Birch was the keyboardist at this show. This was before Joe Tatton had joined the band.
Opening for Karl Denson's Tiny Universe
Recorded, transferred (5/13/2012), tracked (10/21/2019), and mastered (11/11-12/2019), and posted (11/13/2019) by Scott Bernstein
Taper notes:
For BARN192, I bring you back to the very early days of the band New Mastersounds. They continue to be one of my favorite touring acts -- playing just the right balance of jazz and funk for me, but able to get their audiences up and moving and grooving. They jam out a little, but not outrageously so, and they are just so genial, their friendly personalities shine through on stage. As opposed to some of the more jazz-leaning bands, they have no pretention -- you can tell they're there to have a good time, just like we are.
Anyway, getting back to this show -- this was (I believe) their first trip to the United States, on a support tour for Karl Denson's Tiny Universe. As Karl was booked at the High Sierra Music Festival, these guys got to come along too. They played two shows that weekend, both of which I saw and recorded -- this one on the big late night stage opening for KDTU, and one the following afternoon on a smaller stage (which someone has kindly alrady posted here on archive.org https://archive.org/details/nms2005-07-03.flac16). Luckily I had been tipped off by someone back home (frankly I can't recall who) that New Mastersounds were a band I really needed to check out there, and they were right!
I've had many many fun times seeing this band over the years, even including a show of theirs in 2007 as part of my "bachelor party".
This is an awesome early performance of theirs, and the quality of my recording matches the quality of their performance. Hope you all enjoy this recording -- 14+ years later! This is the 2nd recording of theirs that I've included in my archival release series -- the last one dating back to 6/25/2010, as BARN50...guess it was time to revisit another one of their classic shows.
Enjoy!
